He Is More Than A Burden-bearer

2009 Sept. 27 Ten30 AM
Come To Me- all who are weary and heavy-laden
He Is More Than A Burden-bearer Matthew 11:25-30

Matt 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, "I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou didst hide these things from the wise and intelligent and didst reveal them to babes. 26 "Yes, Father, for thus it was well-pleasing in Thy sight. 27 "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. 30 "For My yoke is easy, and My load is light."

The Background events.
Jesus says people call Him a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.
He rebuked the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum because they saw great miracles but they would not believe His claims.

What was the main issue?
People wanted to be on their own and the result is that they ended up carrying their own problems and burdens.
This is the background for the invitation of the Lord.

THE INVITATION:
28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. 30 "For My yoke is easy, and My load is light."

Summarizing the Invitation
Come and Get rested
Take my yoke upon you and find rest for your soul

I- THE INVITATION TO REST CONFIRMS THE TRUTH THAT WE ARE INADEQUATE BY OURSELVES
Come to me all who are WEARY AND HEAVY-LADEN.
Weariness assumes carrying a burden that you are no longer able to sustain-

II- THE INVITATION CONFIRMS THE TRUTH THAT WE NEED THE LORD JESUS BY OUR SIDE
Take My Yoke Upon You And Learn From Me
Yoking describes fellowship and learning during a journey of two persons traveling together

III- THE INVITATION CONFIRMS THE TRUTH THAT REST FROM OUR BURDENS IS A LIFELONG PRIVILEGE FOR US
29 "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.
The promise of rest is premised on a lifelong yoking with and learning from the Lord

3 very important reminders
The weight of the burden increases because we carry it too long
The uncertainty persists when we walk without our teacher by our side
The difficulty deepens when we walk without our guide
